This from Bill.
South Beach Community Center.
Martin Desmond, one of our members, will speak some about the Citizen's Climate Lobby.
Its been about a year since we first gathered to form this 350occ.org chapter. We have grown and accomplished much in terms of building our resolve to deal with climate disruption - written letters to the editor, contacted our legislators, participated in demonstrations, attended meetings and listened to presentations to understand more and to act more effectively, gone into schools and community organizations and presented the situation we are facing with global warming. We have championed several progressive actions like the Declaration of Human Rights and Climate Change, the Clean Energy and Jobs Bill, Ban Aerial Spraying, supported the Pollinator Corridor, encouraged divestment from the fossil fuel industry, encouraged conservation and reduction in consumption. This is all good.
Now as we come together for our second year I would like to ask each of you to consider what more you might like to do as individuals and as a group? Let's approach this question with honesty and be realistic in our goals. Where have we been successful and effective and where not? Our next meeting will be a round table of sorts where each of us who want to speak can, and offer our insights and vision. In addition to evaluating the committee work we've done we will open the floor to other possibilities. Our organization is a place where we can come together for support and encouragement of our unique spirit and offerings.
I would like to end this letter with a quote from Margaret Wheatley.
"We human beings have a great need for each other. Like all forms of life, from microbes to ecosystems, we need to be together. We cannot exist in isolation. Nothing living lives alone. And we see this need for each other even in the West where we've revered independence and individualism. How many of us today are longing for community, wanting to belong? It's important to remember that every time we join an organization, community or group effort that we do so in order to accomplish more. People never join together to accomplish less. We want to create, to find more meaning, to contribute, to belong, and we know we can only achieve this by joining with others. So every act of joining, every organizing effort, has powerful and positive energies present at the inception."
In Unity,
Bill
